Did You Know?
In the 1680s, Scottish Quakers and Presbyterians escaped persecution at home and settled northern Monmouth County. They called the area New Aberdeen. In 1701 the proprietors granted 24 of those settlers a 100-acre village site. Matawan Township took back that old name in 1977 and became Aberdeen Township.
