Every town has a first chapter, and Bluewater is no exception. Bluewater Lake was formed by a concrete arch dam, 80 feet high and 500 feet long, that the Bluewater-Toltec Irrigation District built in the 1920s after earlier dams failed. People from Albuquerque, Bluewater and Gallup held a three-day Fourth of July celebration when it was finished in 1927, and in 1937 Governor Clyde Tingley signed the law that created Bluewater State Park. Park officials say the last time water spilled over the arched dam was in 1941. That's from the Cibola Citizen.
Bluewater is a community in McKinley County. The Census Bureau counted 174 people here in 2020.
