Cecil and the county's first railroad

Railroad Street is a name to look for while reading Cecil's story. In his 1891 Historical Collections of Ohio, Henry Howe says the furnace company built the county's first railroad. It linked Cecil and Paulding. On a trip along that line, he saw a huge brown building near Cecil. Beside it stood 23 white kilns shaped like beehives. They burned wood to make charcoal for the furnace.
Howe's account shows how much work went into making that iron. The company employed 250 people to clear woods and do other jobs. It used about 120 cords of wood a day to make 45 tons of iron. By the time of his account, the furnace had stopped running. The fields and streets on this print give you a present-day view of Cecil to set beside that older story.
