Centre County's iron story started here. In 1792, Col. John Patton and Col. Samuel Miles built the first charcoal iron furnace in the region. Both men had been officers in the American Revolution. Its iron was the first melted in Centre County. It was carried on mule-back to Pittsburgh. The furnace ran until 1809, then fired up again from 1825 to 1858. In those years, Centre County led the way in making Juniata iron, says the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Its marker stands on East College Avenue, just west of Porter Road.
Lemont and the Thompson Grain Elevator
Lemont has a story of its own. In 1885, Lemont founder Moses Thompson built a grain elevator and coal sheds for his son John. Grain went out and coal came in on the Bellefonte, Nittany and Lemont Railroad. A state marker calls the wooden buildings rare survivors of their kind. Moses Thompson also helped start Farmer's High School, which is now Penn State. You'll find the marker on Mount Nittany Road, near Harris Alley.
