Here is a piece of Myrtle Springs history. W. A. T. Murrey, remembered as the founding father of Myrtle Springs, started one of the largest nurseries in Texas, shipping fruit trees, roses and plants all over the United States. He named the town for his favorite flowering shrub, the crepe myrtle, and for his daughter, Myrtle. Before that, the spot was known as Holden Springs, for J. M. Holden, who built a steam gin and mill there in 1872 near a natural spring. That's from the Van Zandt County Historical Commission.
