Every town has a first chapter, and Gilbert Creek is no exception. The creek that gave Gilbert Creek its name was named for Jim Gilbert, a scout killed in a skirmish with Native Americans on that branch of the Guyandotte River. The story told in 1937 was that before he died he struck his gun barrel against a tree so it could not be used on his comrades, and a salt lick near the spot was named Twisted Gun Lick. That's from the Brandon Ray Kirk history blog.
