Benjamin Chew of Philadelphia owned several thousand acres in what is now southern Lawrence County. Settlers could earn half of a four hundred acre tract by settling on it. After he died, his son Benjamin Chew Jr. took over the business. The son laid out the village of Chewton in Wayne Township. That’s from the 1872 History of Lawrence County.
