In 1930 the State Line Golf and Country Club and a land company run by the Smadbeck brothers bought five Putnam farms and dammed Morlock Brook to make an artificial lake. They mapped 11,000 building lots for summer cottages, stores and dance pavilions, and the community of Putnam Lake was born. Three quarters of the lots sold in the first year. During the Second World War, many summer families from New York City stayed on for good. That's from the Town of Patterson.
