Every town has a first chapter, and Navajo Mountain is no exception. Navajo Mountain is Naatsis’áán in Navajo, meaning Head of the Earth. Its rugged land works as a natural shield, and a small band of Navajos found a safe haven here when many of their people were removed to the Bosque Redondo in 1864. A Blind Salt Clansman of that band came upon Rainbow Bridge while rounding up horses. That's from the Navajo Mountain Chapter of the Navajo Nation.

Navajo Mountain is a community in San Juan County. The Census Bureau counted 450 people here in 2020.
