Did You Know?
In 1786 Russian traders set up a salmon drying station on Karluk Lagoon, and in 1878 the Karluk Packing Company built Kodiak's first cannery on Karluk spit. By the late 1800s millions of salmon were packed here every year. The heavy fishing wore down the runs and the last cannery moved to Larsen Bay, but with careful management the salmon came back in the 1900s. That's from the Alutiiq Museum.
