Did You Know?
Carl Whitham began prospecting at Nabesna in 1922, and in 1924 he re-staked an old gold mine whose owners, he believed, had quit too soon. In 1925 a bear digging a gopher out of a mossy outcrop exposed a rich vein, which he named the Bear Vein. His mill opened in July 1931, with 22 men living in tents on the property. That's from the National Park Service.
