Amos Fortune was born in Africa and enslaved, but he bought freedom for himself and his wife. He started a tannery in Jaffrey village and is buried in the local cemetery. Elizabeth Yates told his life in Amos Fortune, Free Man, which won the 1951 Newbery Medal.
