Colonel Joseph Whipple cut trails through the forest here to build a manor house. He first called the town Dartmouth, after William Legge, an English earl. Whipple, a brother of a Declaration of Independence signer, renamed it Jefferson four years before Thomas Jefferson became president. The state granted the new charter on December 8, 1796.
