Settlers began arriving after 1736 in a township then called Upper Ashuelot. In 1747, during King George’s War, Native warriors attacked and burned the village. The colonists fled but came back to rebuild in 1749. Governor Benning Wentworth renamed the town Keene in 1753, after Sir Benjamin Keene.
