Did You Know?
Monroe began with David Smith of Brookhaven on Long Island, who built a house here in 1741. He dammed the creek for a mill, and the place became known as Smith’s Mills. In 1808 it was renamed Munroe for a state senator. A later spelling mix-up led to stories that it honored President James Monroe.
