Sands Higinbotham owned the land where Oneida grew. He gave the railroad free right of way and ground for a station. In return, every passenger train had to stop ten minutes for refreshments. He built the Railroad House to feed travelers, and settlers soon turned the stop into a thriving village. That’s from the 1940 WPA guide to New York.
