Maurice Wurts and his two brothers, Philadelphia store owners, formed a company to build the 108-mile Delaware and Hudson Canal. Philip Hone, the mayor of New York City, broke ground for it here on July 13, 1825, using a golden spade. The canal company named towns along its route for its officers, and the village became Wurtsboro.
