Did You Know?
Ely S. Parker, a Seneca, was born on the reservation in 1828. He helped his friend Lewis H. Morgan learn how Haudenosaunee families and clans worked. Morgan published their research in 1851 as a book on the Iroquois. He dedicated it to Parker.
The Tonawanda Band of Senecas is one of four federally recognized tribes with a presence in the Western District of New York, all members of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy. In 1857, the Tonawanda Band secured federal recognition as an independent Indian nation, and with its share of proceeds from an earlier land sale it bought back most of the Tonawanda Reservation. The Band kept the traditional governing institution of the Confederacy, a Council of Chiefs, and its clan mothers retain the power to remove a chief.
