Did You Know?

Chautauqua Lake’s name comes from the Erie language, which is now extinct. The Erie nation lost the Beaver Wars before anyone studied their language closely. Because of that, the true meaning of the name is still unknown.

Most publications list Chautauqua Lake’s elevation as 1,308 feet above mean sea level. Its waters leave through the Chadakoin River outlet and eventually reach the Gulf of Mexico by way of the Chadakoin, Conewango, Allegheny, Ohio, and Mississippi rivers. Bemus Point, printed on the map, marks a place where the retreating glacier paused and left another soil deposit.
