In 1681, Quakers seeking religious freedom sailed from Ireland and spent the winter at Salem. In 1682 they sailed up the Delaware River to Newton Creek. Their leader, William Bates, bought 250 acres from the local Native Americans. Their Newton Colony stood in what is now the Manor section of Oaklyn.
