Drake Well Park, where oil was struck in 1859

Drake Well Park is the place most people know. A state marker stands there on Museum Lane. It says that on this site, "Col." Edwin Drake struck oil on August 27, 1859. The marker calls it the birth of the petroleum industry. Today the park and its museum are owned by the state. The Drake Oil Well is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the map, look for the park in the top right corner, close to the creek.
Oil Creek and the Miller Farm tank car
Now look at the blue creek on the right side of the map. That's Oil Creek. A marker in nearby Titusville says early explorers found Native people skimming oil off the water there. From 1859 to 1865, most oil work was centered along its banks. Miller Farm Road runs near the creek too. Another marker, on William Flinn Highway, says the first working railway oil tank car was built at Miller Farm in 1865. James and Amos Densmore made it with two wooden tanks set on a flat car.
From Breedtown to Pioneer, all on one print
