The old story behind the Iberia name
For years, a story has gone around about how Iberia got its name. It says Civil War veterans named the town for New Iberia, Louisiana. They'd been stationed there in the war, so the story goes. The State Historical Society of Missouri keeps an old file of place names, gathered from 1928 to 1945. That file calls the story "clearly erroneous." In plain words, it says the tale is wrong. You'll see the name in big letters on the title panel. It shows up again on Iberia Cemetery, near the top right corner.
Iberia also has a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The Iberia Academy and Junior College was added to the Register in 1980. The Register is the nation's official list of places worth saving. The school is inside the city limits, in the part of town this map covers.
