If you grew up along Bedford Avenue, or you still have family on Chauncey Drive, this map is for you. It's a modern aerial view of Bedford Dwellings, a Pittsburgh neighborhood in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, made with modern data and a vintage artistic feel. Bigelow Boulevard cuts a long line across the sheet. Rows of red buildings sit on the green hill above it. A wide blue river fills the top left corner.

Where the Pittsburgh Crawfords played
Baseball history runs deep on this hill. A state marker at Bedford Avenue and Junilla Street says Greenlee Field stood there from 1932 to 1938. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission calls it the first African American owned stadium in the Negro Leagues. It was home to Gus Greenlee's Pittsburgh Crawfords, the 1935 Negro League champs. Its players included Hall of Famers Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell. Another marker, at 2217 Bedford Avenue, says Gibson's career began at Ammons Field in 1929. It calls him the Negro Leagues' greatest slugger. On the map, Bedford Avenue runs beside the red buildings, and you'll spot two small ball fields near Somers Drive.
Daisy Lampkin and Watt Lane
Watt Lane has its own story. Daisy E. Lampkin lived at Webster Avenue and Watt Lane until her death in 1965. She was the NAACP's National Field Secretary from 1935 to 1947. She was also a vice president of The Pittsburgh Courier. On Bedford Avenue, the Tuberculosis Hospital of Pittsburgh at 2851 Bedford Avenue was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
