If you grew up in the Bottoms or near Chartiers Avenue, this map is for you. It's a new aerial view of McKees Rocks in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, made from modern data and given a vintage look. A wide blue river runs down the right side. A winding creek curls along the bottom. More than 4,000 red buildings fill the flats and climb the green hills between them.
Rangers Field and the McKees Rocks Mound
On this map you'll find Chartiers Avenue, Island Avenue, West Carson Street, Broadway Avenue, Church Avenue, Locust Street, Shingiss Street, Sproul Street, Frederick Street, Furnace Street Extended, the Wind Gap Bridge, Rangers Field, 3rd Street Park, and more. Each red shape is a building, so zoom in on the preview and look for yours.
Rangers Field sits in the part of town called the Bottoms, where Shingiss Street meets Sproul Street. A state historical marker there tells a story far older than the town. It remembers the McKees Rocks Mound, the largest Native American burial mound in western Pennsylvania. The marker lists it at 16 feet high and 85 feet wide. The Adena people built it between 200 BC and 100 AD. Later, the Hopewell and Monongahela people used it too. Digs in the late 1800s found 33 skeletons. They also found things made of copper and shells. On the map, look for Rangers Field in the top right, close to the river.
The McKees Rocks Bridge
The McKees Rocks Bridge crosses the Ohio River to Bellevue. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
