Harry Truman's birthplace in Lamar
Lamar is the town where Harry Truman was born. The National Register of Historic Places lists the Harry Truman Birthplace Memorial in Lamar. It was added to the list in 1969. The listing puts it at the north corner of 11th Street and Truman Avenue. Truman Street and East Eleventh Street are both printed on the map.
The town itself is older than that famous birth. The State Historical Society of Missouri keeps an old place names file. It says Lamar was laid out in 1846 by order of the county court. Today its grid of numbered streets, from West First Street to East 20th Street, fills the middle of the map.
