Bert Bell, the NFL Commissioner Who Lived in Narberth

Football fans have a reason to know Narberth. Bert Bell was the National Football League Commissioner from 1946 to 1959. He owned the Eagles and was part owner of the Steelers. He also lived right here in Narberth.

Bell didn't keep to an office. He liked to stop by Davis's store on Haverford Avenue. There he talked about sports with local people, coaches and athletes. A state historical marker now stands at 224 to 226 Haverford Avenue, where the marker says he frequented Davis's store. It also says he helped make pro football popular and raised its ethical standards. Find Haverford Avenue on the map, and you're looking at the street where the league's commissioner stopped in to talk sports with local people.
