How the railroad made Noel a town
Noel is a railroad town. Before the tracks came, a man named Marshall kept a store on his farm in Elk River township. The 1897 history of McDonald County says that when the railroad was built, the town of Noel was platted. Marshall moved his business to the new town.
By 1897, the same book called Noel the principal town and one of the most important railroad points in the county. For many years, people voted at the Marshall school house. In 1896, the voting place moved to Noel.
Mill creek, Butler creek and the Elk River
The book names the streams around town, too. Mill creek joins the Elk River just above Noel. It got its name from a saw mill Moses Martin built near its mouth about 1835. The mill ran on horse power. Butler creek meets the river just below town. Its upper part was called Deer creek, for the herds of deer found there in early days. Railroad Street and Mill Street are both printed on the map.
