Did You Know?

The military first ran a LORAN navigation station on Attu during World War II. In August 2010 the Coast Guard brought down its 625-foot LORAN tower, the tallest structure on the island, because GPS had made the system obsolete. The dozen or so Coast Guardsmen there were Attu's only residents, so closing the station left Alaska's westernmost island uninhabited. That's from the Unalaska public radio station KUCB.

Attu Station is a community in Aleutians West Census Area.
