Colorado City and Hildale, Utah, sit side by side on the state line, and both began as one community called Short Creek. The creek is printed on this map, along with Short Creek Reservoir Number Two, Lauritzen Park, Cottonwood Elementary, El Capitan Public School, the Colorado City Municipal Airport, the Colorado City Police Department and the Hildale-Colorado City Fire Department.
Colorado City is in Mohave County, in the region known as the Arizona Strip.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief of the landscape comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. Colorado City had 2,478 people at the 2020 census, and Hildale, just over the border in Washington County, Utah, had 1,127.
Short Creek
The community was founded in 1913 as Short Creek by members of the Council of Friends, a group that broke away from the Salt Lake City based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They wanted a remote place where they could practice plural marriage, which the LDS Church had publicly given up in 1890. The first school, built in 1914, stood on the Arizona side and was paid for by Mohave County, and a post office followed. Later the community split: the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints stayed at Short Creek, and the Apostolic United Brethren moved to Bluffdale, Utah. The church renamed the two halves Colorado City, in Arizona, and Hildale, in Utah, to leave behind any tie to the Short Creek raids, the first of them in 1953.
Residents incorporated the Town of Colorado City in September 1985, seeking local self-government and essential services. For years most property in the town was owned by the United Effort Plan, a real estate trust of the church, and in 2007 the state began taking that ownership apart.

Schools and a college
The Colorado City Unified School District has one school in town, El Capitan School, formerly the Colorado City K-12 Public School. Mohave Community College, founded by a county vote in October 1970 with campuses in Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City, later added a campus in Colorado City, its North Mohave Campus.
In recent years Hildale has worked to welcome people who left the community and to invite them home, and its page says Colorado City’s leaders have made similar efforts to open their town to outsiders, including a large branch of the college. On the map, Short Creek and Short Creek Reservoir Number Two give shape to the land, with Lauritzen Park and Cottonwood Elementary among the streets.
This Colorado City map is a good addition to an office, library or den, and it can help teach children the geography and history of the area. It’s made for anyone who calls Colorado City home, from Lauritzen Park to the banks of Short Creek, and KNOWOL created it in 2026 to show the town as it looks today.
