Star Valley is a town in northern Gila County, bordered on the west by Payson.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave modern data the look of a vintage atlas. The shaded relief of Cypress Hill and Monument Peak comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. The town sits at 4,650 feet and covers about 36 square miles surrounded by the Tonto National Forest, near Payson and the Mogollon Rim, and the 2020 census counted 2,484 people.
Diamond Star to Star Valley
Star Valley takes its name from the valley it sits in, which Houston Creek formed on its way south through the Tonto National Forest to Tonto Creek, a tributary of the Salt River. Before it incorporated it was a census-designated place, and it was incorporated in 2005 as the Town of Diamond Star, then changed its name to Star Valley in 2006. The town’s own history says the area has been home to people for thousands of years: the Mogollon, Ancestral Puebloan and Hohokam cultures came first, followed by the Apache people, and the nearby Tonto Apache Tribe is still part of the region’s heritage. In the late 1800s ranching, mining and frontier settlement brought new residents to the Rim Country. Arizona State Route 260 runs through town, west 4 miles into Payson and east 85 miles to Show Low.

The B. Diane McDaniel Community Park on Highway 260 is named for Diane McDaniel, whose dedication and leadership were central to the town’s incorporation. Set back from the highway, it has playgrounds, a splash pad, a zip line, a pickleball court, outdoor musical instruments, picnic areas and a ramada families can reserve. The Star Valley Community Garden started in 2018 on what had been an empty town lot, and with volunteers and donations it has become a place where neighbors grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, and many gardeners share their harvest with people in need. The town also bought its water company from a private owner and turned it into a public utility. Star Valley students are in the Payson Unified School District, with Payson High School as their high school. The Star Valley Town Hall, the Rim View Community Church, Dueker Ranch, Patterson Farms and Lion Spring have their places on the sheet as well.
