Flowing Wells sits between Interstate 10 and the Rillito River, on the edge of Tucson. Flowing Wells is a census-designated place in Pima County, a suburb of Tucson.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief of the landscape comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. The community covers 3.4 square miles, all of it land, roughly bounded by Interstate 10 on the west, the Rillito River on the north and the City of Tucson on the south and east. It had 15,657 people at the 2020 census.
An All-America City
In 2007 the National Civic League gave the Flowing Wells community an All-America City Award. The league has given the award since 1949, and it honors communities that bring residents, businesses, nonprofits and government together to take on hard problems. Each year the finalists send people to Denver to tell a jury of national experts the story of their work, and ten communities win. Communities of every size can enter, from big cities and regions to towns, neighborhoods and tribes, and Flowing Wells, an unincorporated place of a few square miles, was one of the winners.
The community has its own water, too. The Flowing Wells Irrigation District, an independent public water provider founded in 1922, supplies the southern part of the community, which is most of it. Fire protection and paramedics come from the Northwest Fire District, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department covers Flowing Wells from its Foothills District.

Schools and the library
The Flowing Wells Unified School District runs the public schools in most of the community, while the far eastern edge is served by Amphitheater Public Schools. The district’s schools here include the Emily Meschter Early Learning Center, Flowing Wells Junior High School and three elementary schools, Centennial, Homer Davis and Laguna. The Pima County Public Library runs the Flowing Wells branch, and the Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Community Center and Carden of Tucson have their places on the sheet too.
The Rillito
The Rillito River, Spanish for “little river,” runs east to west along the northern edge of Tucson for 12.2 miles, from where Tanque Verde Creek and Pantano Wash meet to the Santa Cruz River. As late as the late 19th century it was a stream that ran all year, lined with cottonwoods, willows and mesquites. Groundwater pumping and growth dried it up, and today it carries water only in floods or snowmelt. The Rillito River Park follows both banks from Interstate 10 to North Craycroft Road. On the map, Casas Adobes Wash gives the land its shape, and the streets run from Jaynes out to Gardner Estates.
