Wellton was first Well Town, named for the water wells drilled for the Southern Pacific Railroad’s steam engines, and today its living comes from farming. Wellton is a town in Yuma County, 29 miles east of Yuma along Interstate 8.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave modern data the look of a vintage atlas. The shaded relief of the landscape comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. The town covers 28.88 square miles, surrounded by the Gila Mountains and local farms, and the 2020 census counted 2,375 people here.
Stagecoach, railroad and farm
The town’s own history says most of this area was settled in the 1860s, when stations were needed for the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoaches. As the railroads replaced the stage lines in the 1870s, communities such as Tacna and Wellton grew up to supply water to the steam engines, and Wellton was founded in 1878. Then, as the town puts it, the stagecoach gave way to the railroad, and the railroad gave way to the automobile. Trains still run through the Wellton-Mohawk Valley, but the living here comes from agriculture: the valley’s soil and water have grown lettuce, onions and cotton. Wellton incorporated in 1970, and it now serves as a center for business, services and recreation for the valley around it.
Wellton is a small town with a full set of services, from its own water utility, police, fire department and municipal court to a medical clinic, a community pool and two golf courses. In winter the population roughly doubles as snowbirds from the western states and the western Canadian provinces fill the RV parks, and the town has become a popular place to retire. Each year it holds the Pioneer Day Parade and Fiesta, with a barbecue, games, arts and crafts and a golf tournament, along with an old-fashioned Fourth of July and a fishing derby. Wellton’s encyclopedia entry lists the agricultural geneticist Derald Langham among its notable people. Known as the “father of sesame” in the Western Hemisphere, he did the breeding work behind most of the sesame grown in the Americas, and Venezuela honored him as the father of its modern agriculture.

The town’s website points visitors to its Pioneer Museum to learn Wellton’s history, and Wellton’s encyclopedia entry describes the Wellton Mohawk Valley Museum, with exhibits on the early settlers and their work building up farming in the area. Butterfield Park is the town’s place for family picnics, and the Butterfield Golf Course, an 18-hole par 3 course, and Coyote Wash Golf Course play against a backdrop of mountains and orange sunsets. Wellton Elementary School teaches the town’s younger children, and older students go to Antelope Union High School just outside town, the only high school in its district, serving eastern Yuma County. Arizona Western College runs a satellite campus at the Wellton Learning Center, and Wellton’s branch of the Yuma County Library has moved into a new building on San Jose Avenue.
