Every town has a first chapter, and Mexican Colony is no exception. Mexican Colony was settled around 1927 by displaced Mexican families. A man known as Big John and his wife, Margarita Rodriguez, founded the colony, and its residents built their own community and support systems with very little infrastructure to rely on. The Shafter Press reported that after almost 100 years without a park, the colony celebrated the opening of its own park, the result of more than six years of informal neighborhood meetings.
