Onyx has a story worth telling. Onyx was first known as Scodie's Station, for William Scodie, a native of Prussia who first kept its store in 1861. Besides the store, the station had a barn, a stable and a blacksmith shop, and the Onyx Store that replaced the first adobe building became one of the Kern River Valley's treasured landmarks. As a boy Scodie went to sea as a ship's cook, and he worked in Chile and Australia before coming to California. That's from the Kern View Foundation.

Onyx is a community in Kern County. The Census Bureau counted 457 people here in 2020.
