Here is a piece of Topaz history. Dorothy Nyswander, a pioneer of public health education, spent her early years on the big Rickey cattle and sheep ranch at Topaz. After UC Berkeley recruited her in 1946, she made its School of Public Health the first in the nation to stress the behavioral sciences in health education. Her father kept the books and ran the Rickey Land and Cattle Company, headquartered in Topaz, and the family's first home there was one big room in the Topaz Company Store. That's from the Bancroft Library Regional Oral History Office.
