Did You Know?
By 1910, Layton was gaining fame as a fishing spot, helped by sportswriter Zane Grey. The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 wrecked most tourist buildings on Long Key, including a railroad station. After World War II, Miami grocers Mary and Delbert Layton bought 40 acres there. Their fishing camp grew, and the City of Layton was incorporated in 1963.
