Did You Know?
General James Oglethorpe named Jekyll Island for Sir Joseph Jekyll, a lawyer and statesman who gave money to help found the Georgia colony. From 1888 to 1942 the island was a retreat for very rich families, with names like Astor, Morgan, Pulitzer, Rockefeller and Vanderbilt keeping cottages here. The State of Georgia bought the island in 1947 to make it a state park, with ten miles of white sandy beach. That's from the book Georgia Place-Names by Kenneth Krakow.
