Here is a piece of Fort Riley history. In 1852 Army surveyors chose the meeting of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers for a new post. They believed it was near the center of the United States and named it Camp Center. On June 27, 1853, it became Fort Riley, for Maj. Gen. Bennett C. Riley, who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail. When the 1st Infantry Division made the fort its home base in 1955, new quarters and barracks went up on Custer Hill. That's from the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley.
