Every town has a first chapter, and West Pocomoke is no exception. Hayward's Lott, on the north side of the Pocomoke River, is one of the largest and costliest plantation houses of the mid 1700s still standing, with all four brick walls laid in glazed checkerboard patterns. The Hayward family held the land for almost two hundred years, until 1948. Thomas Hayward, who served for many years as clerk of the Somerset County court, lived in the house through the Revolutionary War years. That's from the Maryland Historical Trust.
