Hallsville was here before the trains. The 1882 History of Boone County names the first families who lived where Hallsville now stands. Among them were John Roberts, Peter and Joseph Fountain, and Smith Turner. When the railroad was built, a new town called Hickman was laid out half a mile south. Hickman got the depot. Hickman, the new town, did not catch on. The county history says it "has persistently refused to grow to this day." Hallsville is the town that is still here. The 2020 census counted 1,614 people here. On the map, look for the thick cluster of red roofs along North Street and Elizabeth Street.
