Marceline's schools grew fast after 1888

According to a 1912 Linn County history, the first school term ran seven months, in the fall and winter of 1888 and 1889. Five teachers taught 306 pupils. By 1912, there were twenty teachers and a nine-month term. The count of school children had climbed to 1,267. That's more than four times as many in less than twenty-five years.

Four downtown buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Uptown Theatre is at 104 North Kansas Avenue, which the Register lists as North Main St. U.S.A. The Marceline Masonic Lodge #481 is at 201 North Main Street U.S.A. The Christian Church is at 116 West Gracia Avenue. The Marceline Mercantile and Supply Company is at 125 East California Avenue.
