Pharsalia, the post office of 1846
In the spring of 1846, the people of Milan got a post office established near the county seat. It was named Pharsalia, and a mail route ran once a week each way between Pharsalia and Linneus. The story is told in the 1888 Goodspeed history of Sullivan County.
Milan's railroad days are remembered too. Two railroad buildings in town are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Quincy, Omaha and Kansas City Railroad Office Building is listed at 117 North Water Street. The Milan Railroad Depot is listed near East Third Street.
