Monett was named for a railroad man. The State Historical Society of Missouri keeps an old file of place names. Its entry for Monett lists the Monett Townsite Company and the date September 12, 1887. It says the town was named for a general passenger agent of a railroad. A rail line cuts across the sheet on a long diagonal, right through the middle of town.

In January 2026, the White Way Oil Company Station at 5 Broadway Street was added to the National Register of Historic Places. East Broadway Street is printed on the map.
