Muddy has a story worth telling. Muddy took its name from Muddy Creek, named for the look of its water, which meets Rosebud Creek nearby. In January 1886 the first resident agent for the Cheyenne made his headquarters in a dugout where the two creeks join, so the agency's first headquarters stood at Muddy. A post office opened at Muddy in 1884 and stayed open until 1901. That's from the Montana place-names book by Roberta Cheney.
Muddy is a community in Big Horn County. The Census Bureau counted 646 people here in 2020.
