Every town has a first chapter, and Ovando is no exception. Miners who decided to stay settled the Ovando area in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and the town they built was first called Sadiesville. It became Ovando when Ovando Hoyt wrote to Washington asking for mail service and a post office, and the postal authorities renamed it. Ovando boomed in the early 1900s, when it was headquarters of the Flathead National Forest and the Milwaukee Railroad planned a line from Missoula to Great Falls that would pass the town. That's from the North Powell Conservation District.
Ovando is a community in Powell County. The Census Bureau counted 83 people here in 2020.
