Every town has a first chapter, and Duran is no exception. The New Mexico Tourism Department puts it this way: "Blas and Espiridón Durán, two brothers, owned wells in central New Mexico which could provide water to railroad work crews. So, the railroad built repair shops and even a wooden roundhouse in what became Duran." The railroad made Duran a supply point for area ranches almost overnight, and the town probably peaked at about 300 people. The roundhouse came down in 1921 when the railroad moved south to Carrizozo, but Duran stayed important to ranchers.
Duran is a community in Torrance County. The Census Bureau counted 44 people here in 2020.
