Here is a piece of Truchas history. In 1754 Governor Tomás Vélez Cachupín granted land on the Río Truchas to families from Santa Cruz and Chimayó. The village was first called Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Truchas, and because it stood on the far northern frontier, open to attack, the governor ordered its houses built around a square with only one entrance. That's from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division.
Truchas is a community in Rio Arriba County. The Census Bureau counted 467 people here in 2020.
