Did You Know?
The village began as a colony for refugees fleeing the French Revolution. It was founded in 1792 on 210,000 acres bought by La Compagnie de New York. Its name means Land of the Beaver. Harsh winters, poor planning and lost livestock and money ended the colony in 1814.
