Cincinnatus is named for Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, the Roman general. The land was part of the Military Tract, used to pay soldiers who fought in the American Revolution. Settlers arrived around 1795, while Oneida people still lived in the area. It was one of the six original towns of Cortland County.
