King Louis XV of France once granted this land to Louis Joseph Robart. That grant was lost when the British took the region after 1763. Settlement began around 1765 for William Gilliland, who planned a baronial estate here. Essex grew into a shipbuilding port, but that trade collapsed after railroads arrived in 1849.
